DZHARKUTAN 4V, GRAVE FIELD OF THE SAPALLI CULTURE - RESEARCH FINDINGS

FULL TEXT:

Abstract

In recent decades, archaeological science has turned many previously unknown pages of the Bronze Age of
Uzbekistan. Many of them, in one way or another, are associated with the Proto-Bactrian ancient agrarian
Sapallin culture. Having shown proto-urban features during its formation and development, the culture
turned out unusually rich in its spiritual heritage. The article will focus on the Dzharkutan 4Vj burial ground.
Stratigraphic and planigraphic data helped to identify four successive complexes, namely Dzharkutan, Kuzalin,
Molalin, and Bustan. Based on the statistical-combinatorial research method, we studied 22 objects, of which
17 were direct burials, and the rest were defined as ritual and ceremonial complexes. The burials graphically
marked on the general layout of the excavation helped not only to visualize them but also clarify the stage,
determine the purpose of the object, and, if the latter is a burial, concretize it. The analysis of funeral rituals
made it possible to identify two options for inhumation namely corpse deposition and secondary burial. We
identified five objects with non-funerary purposes, which allowed us to attribute them to symbolic funeraryceremonial
cults. The revealed complex of artifacts from some burials and details of the funeral rite indicate
the ethnocultural ties of ancient farmers and pastoral tribes of the steppe part of Eurasia in the second half of
the 2nd millennium BC. In this regard, the information value of the material provided increases, making it
possible to supplement the existing information about the mythological and ritual actions of the inhabitants of
the Sapalli culture.
